Start with the severity of symptoms

A primary care sick visit can fit many non-emergency concerns when the practice has appropriate availability. Urgent care may be useful when you need prompt evaluation outside your primary care office’s hours or capabilities.

When primary care may fit

Common examples can include cold or flu-like symptoms, sore throat, mild fever, headache, minor rashes, or other routine concerns. Call first because age limits, testing, and same-day availability can change.

When urgent or emergency care is safer

Seek emergency help for severe chest pain, trouble breathing, stroke symptoms, major injury, severe bleeding, loss of consciousness, or another potentially life-threatening problem. Call 911 when appropriate.

Why calling first helps

A short conversation with the practice can clarify whether an appointment, telehealth visit, urgent care, or emergency evaluation is the better next step.
